IMPACT

Since Langston League's founding in 2016, we've provided culturally responsive materials to clients in ten cities and two countries.

Culturally Responsive Materials
To Transform Your Instruction

You might not know where to start, but cultural responsiveness is not about infusing rap music or hip-hop into a lesson. It is also not about lining the hallways with photos of Latin celebrities during Hispanic Heritage Month or Taco Tuesday in the cafeteria. Understanding your scholars’ culture and decolonizing untruths cannot be done with a quick fix or a lesson plan adjustment. Those are superficial and shallow understandings of culture.

Deep understanding of culture is making your scholars’ backgrounds and experiences part of their daily life through the books on the shelves, their assignments, and instructional material, as well as their interactions with educators and staff.

We work to make learning more relevant by infusing cultural knowledge, student experiences, beliefs, and interests into each lesson – not merely added on.

We believe that instructional design is a curation of instructor decisions and includes many facets: diverse and inclusive texts, differentiation, activism, innovation, collaboration, transparency, creative problem-solving, cross-disciplinary learning and more.

Having well designed culturally responsive materials is integral to scholar success and performance. Our materials are laid out as a menu to empower educators, designed as a foundational set of options instead of must-dos.

Our clients include Google Code Next, Medgar Evers College Center for Literacy, Up Education Network, Achievement First Schools (AFUp2College), Techspark, Harlem Children’s Zone and more!

Testimonials

Salahadeen Betts, Program Director

Harlem Children's Zone

“Partnering with Langston League was one of the best professional development decisions I have made as a director of youth programs. They were able to get everyone from my full-time managers and coordinators to our part-time group leaders, the basic skills to create more engaging activities for our scholars. They taught our staff how to lesson plan and be creative in using relatable discussions and projects that reinforce the core academic work students do in school. They were also flexible in catering to the needs of our specific program. We plan on using them for staff training once a year.”
